Today we decided to give out to you some details on one of the game's many vehicles. We asked our old friend, firefighter Udo Valentin, to present
us the Light Rescue Vehicle as he happened to be around the vehicle bay.
"These vehicles are essential to any rescue mission" says Udo as we circle around the LRV. "Whenever there's an emergency, it's always imperative to get to the
site ASAP, so that professionals can make further assessments and call possible backup if necessary. Of course, it's also important to be actually able to have some equipment with you as well. These Light
Rescue Vehicles combine fast response time with equipment adequate enough for the first strike.
The vehicle is built on Terrain Ranger Champion chassis, which is a popular model in military and rescue use. "This is a very versatile truck, with high utility in off-road
environments. We can get equipment and personnel fast to most hard-to-reach places, even if the heavier vehicles must be left further
away from the site." The LRV looks a bit bulky, but it's very agile for it's size. "The turbo-diesel engine with 350 Nm maximum torque output,
7,5 meter turning radius and permanent four wheel drive mean that we cango anywhere we need and still have enough maneuverability that we don't
have to ram our way through traffic jams, as long as we have some room to wiggle through."
"Many missions would have gone much worse if we didn't have the speed and efficiency these babies provide" Udo continues while opening up one of the compartments, showing some of the
equipment. "The rigs we use have room for four people plus equipment such as this generator, hydraulic cutting tools, first aid kit, and fire
extinguishers. You know, the sort of things we usually need first when we get there. We also have a light mast here, which can be raised when it's dark and rainy."
This time we present to you a vehicle that is indispensable when additional supply of hoses is needed at the scene of fire, be it large-scale forest
or industrial fire.
This Hose Carrier Vehicle (HCV) is rarely needed in urban environments, but during intense industrial fires or in sparsely populated areas such as outskirts of villages or forest roads
the vehicle will be very valuable in bridging the gap between water sources and the scene of fire. To this end, the HCV carries over 2000 meters of various hoses. The vehicle carries a number of hose frames for
both supply and attack hoses, couplings and other water supply equipment, that can be used to support and strengthen the available firefighting resources.
The firefighter Kaspar Lorenz is coming to the vehicle bay now. His shift is beginning and he's about to start the regular maintenance of HCV. "When we need a larger dispatch to the
scene, I'm usually the one driving this Hose Carrier. I do the driving and the two other firefighters with me get the hoses out and make the necessary couplings. Together we can get sufficient amount
of attack hoses to almost anywhere" Kaspar tells us as he checks the condition of the supply hoses. "The truck itself is fairly heavy, 9700 kg with all the equipment inside. However, the suspension and large
tires enable it to traverse most terrain easily. It's quite a fun vehicle to drive and I'm always happy to take this one out for a test drive!"
We ask Kaspar about the new stripings on the HCV. "We are changing the striping on our vehicles right now. After some tryouts we ended up with four themes and chose these yellow stripes to be our
new look. From time to time we do some co-operation with other fire stations and it's convenient to tell apart our vehicles with a quick look."
